In April 1969 a 'legendary' event occurred during a meeting of the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA): a piglet was released, to the astonishment and fun of all present. This event was to signal, as only such 'symbolic lunacy' could, the brief militancy that was about to take over in Finnish architecture circles. With some consistent re-scripting and echoing the syntax of the Russian and Dutch avant-gardists of the 1920s and 1930s, an emerging rationalism was to appropriate the agenda for Finnish architecture for the next forty years. Today's leading architecs in Finland now represent the inevitable features of what resulted from that period of dissent; a neo-conservative constructive realism. Many of these former activist-architecs have cleverly consolidated new visions to suit a past of their own making. Yet, as architecs also talk up the achievements of architecture in a technologically advanced society, the public perception of the 'real' now appears to show signs of an increasingly hidden and impotent malaise. Though a short period strangely forgotten, the piglet years was influential in no uncertain terms and can be seen to have shaped the carefully controlled agenda and image of Finnish architecture over the last four decades.
